How to Know if a Career as an Independent Consultant is Right for You

Should I or shouldn’t I? Determining whether an independent consultant career is a good fit for you can be a bit challenging -- even daunting. That's why it's important to examine the specific skills and qualities that you possess. It's also important to evaluate yourself in terms of areas in which you can improve. Although consultants can come from a variety of different backgrounds and have a wide range of skill sets, there are certain qualities that are vital for consulting success.

Is an Independent Consultant Career Right for You?

The following qualities are absolutely essential in becoming a successful independent consultant:

  • Superior communication skills, including the ability to speak and listen. If you are unable to listen effectively, that will hurt your ability to be successful as an independent consultant.
  • Comfort with accountability. On one hand, you will experience the satisfaction that accompanies the ability to influence the strategic direction and results of an organization. On the other, you need to understand that you are accountable for the counsel that you provide for your clients.
  • The ability to be “on,” rain or shine. When you are hired as an independent consultant, your clients are buying the top 20% of your brainpower. Bad day, good day, you have to be present, enthusiastic and consistent when you are interfacing with your clients.
  • Intellectual curiosity is a must. You must be on the forefront of industry changes; looking for solutions to new challenges.

If you feel that you possess these skills, consulting might be a perfect fit. However, if you feel like you lack these qualities, consulting is still an option.
